Reflection
On Tuesday April 10, I taught the vocal warm-up Zing On. As I watched my video I noticed several components to my teaching that I thought I executed well, as well as some areas in which I can improve upon for my future teachings.
Planning –
After redoing my lesson I felt that I had a decent lesson plan for this teaching. The lesson plan was detailed to where a follow teacher would be able to follow along with my teaching. I admit that the lesson was vague which is something that I will need to work on. Nonetheless, I think that I produced a filed ready lesson plan. (INTASC 7)
Preparation –
My preparation for this filed teaching was not as throw as what I had hoped it would be. I original plain for a tune based warm up, however I changed the exercise the day before, that said, I feel that I was able to deliver the materials in a timely effective manor. I will need to be more pro-active in my organizational skills, and develop a more efficient time management skill to be a truly effective teacher in the future.
Teaching -
I had begun my teaching by asking everyone to be a “Raggedy Ann” doll and slouch over. I believed that this imagery worked due to the class gender ratio 1:0. However, I should be weary of gender stereotyping that way I do not offend anyone in a future classroom. After the class was slouched over I told the students to swing back in forth. However, it was not until after the class started to swing that I committed on not hitting each other. I should have either stated that before to help prevent possible classroom management issues, or not have stated at all since there was no classroom management problem.
After the warm up I had the class sing Zing On. However, my transition time between was just awful. A student had made a comment about her last year student teacher, in which, I should have just ignore however, and I did not. I am not sure if this was that big of an issue in this teaching but I can easily see this forming into a bigger tangent issue later in my future. I will need to watch on how much I stray from the lesson for future lessons. As the students modified up to the next half step, I attempted to give feedback to what I heard. However, the very first thing I said was “better vowels”. This was a big mistake on my part. I gave the students the wanted out come without the right processes on how to achieve it. I was able to give the students better more direct feedback as the warm up went on. (INTASC 8)
After I felt as though the students were comfortable with the warm up I got out from behind the piano, and walk around to view if the students in the far end students where doing the vocal exercise correct. I think that this is a major set for my personally. I tend to stay behind an object for separation in my early peer teaching, and by taking the risk of moving, I broke through the fear of being a pro-active teacher.
Conclusion -
Overall, I think that I took noticeable stride in my teaching abilities, That said, I understand that a good teacher takes more than just good teaching, and I will need to work on other personal skills like organization to be a truly successful teacher.
NTASC Relativity
This artifact shows that I have the ability to be critical of my own self. I am able to review my teaching episodes without bias to develop my skills as a teacher. This artifact shows that I understand and practice INTASC 9. This artifact shows that when it comes to construction criticism that I am be my own worse enemy, per say, however, I believe that it is because of my ability to be so critical of myself that I will be able to eventually develop into a great educator.
